The Westside Secondary School Thunder junior boys’ volleyball team saved their best effort for the end of the season when they managed to pull off a big win in their semi-final match with Emmanuel Christian High School (ECHS), earning the right to advance to the District 4 championship.
The Thunder had a decent season but finished fourth in a five-team field in the regular season winning four of 12 matches played.
The fourth-place finish gave them a berth in the playoffs, but they were up against first-place ECHS, who won nine of 12 matches this season.
The Thunder stepped up and managed to win the semi-final in five sets in the best-of-five match playoff game to earn the right to advance.
In the other semi-final, Centre Dufferin District High School from Shelburne eliminated Wellington Heights Secondary School in a match that went four sets.
That set up the District final between Westside and Centre Dufferin.
Both teams played well as they battled hard to get the edge on the other squad.
Centre Dufferin managed to win three sets to win the District 4 junior title.
