With two games left on the regular season schedule, the Westside Secondary School Thunder girl’s senior basketball team leads the District 4 standings with a 7-1 record after a win over the Erin District High School Raiders on Friday, Oct. 20.

With three minutes left in the third quarter, the Thunder had moved into a 28-19 lead over the Raiders, shutting down the Erin attack for the quarter. They extended that lead to 14 points to start the fourth quarter with a 33-19 lead.

In the final quarter, the Erin team fought back, gaining some momentum, but the Thunder kept up the pressure to take the win 39-32.

It was their seventh win of the season.

“It was a slow start in the first but, in in the third we really came out,” summed up Westside’s Jessica Burnside. “In the third we beat them 13-0. Once we got the momentum going we were good. Compared to how we played them before, it wasn’t out best game. Shots were going in, in the first half, but they really started going in during the second half.”

The Thunder have played well all season. Jessica contributes that to a team that really wants to win.

“Over all we’re pretty happy,” Jessica said. “I think we have people that want to shoot and score. In previous years we had players who got the ball but weren’t looking to score. Now we have more drive and when more people do that it drives the rest of us and we have more opportunities.”

The Thunder are putting out a real effort to be a winning team this season.

“We practice a lot,” Jessica said. “Every day we either have a practice or a game pretty much.”

The Thunder played their final regular season game on Wednesday, Oct. 26, with results not available at press time.

The playoffs are scheduled to get underway on Monday, Nov. 6, with the semi-finals.

Westside will have a home-court advantage for that game.
