The Westside Secondary School Thunder girl’s hockey team is done for the season after taking a loss in their District 4 semi-final game against the Centre Dufferin District High School Royals in Shelburne on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
The Thunder had a tough season winning only one regular season game, but they delivered a lot of competition to the other teams during the season.
District 4 girl’s hockey is played as a series of tournaments throughout the season.
The final tournament took place at the Alder Street arena in Orangeville on Feb. 13 before heading into the playoffs.
“It was tricky because we all came from different teams, but we were really able to stay positive, and I think that was the most fun,” said Westside goalie Lauren Holmes of the season. “Even though we were losing we started to lose by less and less every single game.”
Lauren had a stellar final game stopping a lot of shots from the CDDHS team. It was her first year playing goalie. She stepped up and volunteered when the team needed a goalie to start the season.
“They needed a goalie, and I said, ‘sure,’ just because it’s a good group of girls,” Lauren explained.
Lauren had some past experience on the ice but never in goal.
“Going into the playoffs, we were talking about it and staying positive and communicating out there,” Lauren said. “It was a positive time with all the girls. It was super fun. We were all trying out best. Even though it wasn’t the result we wanted, we were all staying positive with each other and having a good time.”
The District 4 championship game will pit Centre Dufferin against Wellington Heights Secondary School from Mount Forest at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex in Shelburne on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
Game time is 1:30 p.m.
