Orangeville Council kicked off its meeting on Monday night (Jan. 28) with some positive news, recognizing two “extraordinary” citizens for their contributions to the community over the years.
Jill Cutter and Ruth Garwood were named co-recipients of the 2018 Municipal Senior of the Year Award in a short ceremony inside council chambers. There, local Mayor Sandy Brown offered words of congratulations, commending both Ms. Cutter and Ms. Garwood for their commitment to serving on various levels for close to two decades.
“Each year, the Town of Orangeville pays tribute to seniors who have enriched the social, cultural or civic life of the community. This year, we have two incredibly worthy recipients,” Mayor Brown said.
Ms. Cutter has been a member of the Orangeville Horticultural Society since 2001. She has served on the organization’s board of directors and is the coordinator of the Garden Angels, a group that tends to 10 Town-owned gardens. She also assists with the annual Hidden Gems garden tour fundraiser and is a past member of Go Go Grannies. Jill also volunteers as a member of the Communities in Bloom committee.
“Recognized for her work with the Horticultural Society, Jill has been an active member of our community since 1980. She is a person who gets things done,” Mayor Brown said. “No job is too small for Kill to take on.”
Ruth Garwood has been an Orangeville resident for more than 18 years and is one of the community’s true Girl Guide, Spark and Brownie leaders. Ruth is a long-term volunteer with Orangeville Minor Soccer and, as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, offers IT support and is the Legion liaison with the 85 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Grand Valley and the 1849 Lorne Scots Army Cadets in Orangeville. Ms. Garwood is also the commanding officer of the 164 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Shelburne.
“These are two fantastic community leaders,” Mayor Brown said. “I’m pleased we can recognize their contributions to our town.”
