Duck Day is returning to Dufferin County.
The Grand Valley Lions 25th Annual Duck Race is being held at Hereward Park on May 28, featuring 75 prizes totalling over $19,000.
Tickets are on sale now at $5 each and can be ordered by e-transfer through Randy McClelland, Grand Valley Lions’ Duck Race chair, at randymcc@rogers.com. Include your name, address, email and phone number in the e-transfer and a ticket will be sent to you.
The tickets can also be bought in-person at Bryan’s Fuel (400 Richardson Rd.), Highland Restoration DKI (9 Commerce Rd.), and Davenport Auto Supplies (74 First St.).
A total of 3,500 tickets are being sold this year.
“Having 3,500 rubber duckies in a river is something to see,” said McClelland of the event. “It’s not just one or two, there’s a mass of ducks coming down, and the kids just love it. It’s a fun family event.”
The way the duck race works is, a crane dumps the ducks in a steel basket into the Grand River and they float down with the current, ending at Hereward Park, where residents can gather and cheer.
At the finish line the ducks are guided into a chute and the first duck through wins the first-place prize. There’s a total of 75 different prizes.
In addition to the duck race, there will be a community breakfast, plant sale, and garage sale at the Grand Valley Community Centre on May 28.
Live entertainment will also be going on at Hereward Park, as well as fun activities for kids, such as bouncy castles, airbrush tattoos, and face painting.
“We got four Paw Patrol characters coming for the kids. We’ve got Chase, Marshall, Skye and Rocky,” McClelland enthused.
Free duck hats will also be available.
The Grand Valley Fire Department will have their truck there for kids to climb in and explore.
Refreshments will be available at the event as well.
It’s free to attend and watch the duck race – everyone is welcome.
The race starts at 2 p.m.
