Mono residents won’t have to worry about the giant solar farm proposal anymore. Yesterday, the Town of Mono received a letter from Suncor Energy that they would be withdrawing their application.
This response comes only two weeks after the Town of Mono submitted a letter to the company, as well as to Premier Kathleen Wynne, announcing their opposition to the project and highlighting many of the concerns that had been brought forward by members of the community.
Several of the concerns included a lack of transparency and honesty from Suncor and Canadian Solar, as well as a lack of appropriate information regarding the project, including not having the correct location for the proposal, amidst other things.
Addressed to Deputy Mayor Ken McGhee, the letter explained that the company had appreciated receiving the Town’s concerns and visions regarding what they would like to see as part of their sustainable future.
Belinda Phillips, who penned the letter on behalf of Suncor’s President and CEO, Steve Williams, attributed the decision to pull out to a number of factors, mainly regarding the feasibility of the proposed site’s capabilities to meet their needs.
“After assessing these factors, we have decided not to submit a bid for the proposed Sheldon Solar project in the 2015 IESO’s LRP I Request for Proposal process,” wrote Ms. Phillips.
This is the second proposed Solar project to pull out of Mono after being met with protest by residents in the community.
