Stolen Jeep leads to damaged police cruiser and 13 day crime spree

A jeep that was stolen from a local convenience store parking lot, struck a police cruiser, then was used in a two-week crime spree has recovered and the accused has been arrested.

Early on Thursday, October 8th, a Jeep Cherokee SUV was reported as stolen from a parking lot of a local retailer. Later that evening, the same vehicle was spotted in Shelburne, where Shelburne Police managed to locate the vehicle. Initially, two Shelburne officers were able to successfully stop and block the vehicle, however the driver managed to escape the blockade by colliding with a Shelburne Police cruiser, leaving the cruiser disabled.

This led to a brief pursuit by the second Shelburne Police officer who was unable to safely stop the Jeep again.

Over the next few days, Shelburne Police and Orangeville police continued their investigation of the theft, resulting in the identification of the driver of the stolen vehicle and the issuing of a warrant for his arrest. 

Over the next 13 days, the suspect continued to travel using the stolen Jeep, throughout both the local area as well as Southern Ontario, using the Jeep in a number of thefts in various towns and cities in Southern Ontario. This included another incident in Orangeville.

On Wednesday, October 21st, Woodstock Police located and recovered the Jeep shortly after midnight, as well as arrested the suspect on the warrant issued by Shelburne Police. He was found asleep by Woodstock Police near where the Jeep was recovered.

Th 38-year-old suspect was returned to the Shelburne Police, where he was charged for all offences that took place in Shelburne and Orangeville.

Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
Flight From Police
Fail to Remain
Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Theft
Breach of Probation — 4 Counts
Driving while under suspension — 3 counts

Along with the charges placed by Shelburne police, other police services in Southern Ontario have issued warrants for the suspect in relation to the crimes committed during the 13-day period.

The suspect was held for a bail hearing at the Orangeville Court House.
