The 65th Annual Shelburne Fiddle Fest Parade was called off on Saturday after tragedy struck in the staging area for the event. Social Media blew up around 2 p.m. following news that a horse had fallen on top of a child during preparations for the parade.

Shelburne Police and the Coroner’s office began an investigation shortly afterwards, stating that foul play was not a factor at that point in the investigation.

Early reports said that the 12 year old girl was getting ready to participate in the parade, and minutes before the start, the horse she was on reared up, causing both the girl and the horse to fall.

Dufferin Paramedics, Shelburne Fire and Shelburne Police responded immediately to the parade staging area, and the young girl was tended to quickly by emergency crews. She was then air lifted to Headwaters Hospital in Orangeville, where it was reported that she succumbed to her injuries.

The parade was canceled as a result of the incident, and Shelburne Police extended their sincere sympathies to the family of the victim, as well as all members of the community affected by it.

This afternoon, the Shelburne Police Department released an update, stating that the coroner’s office has completed its investigation into the tragic incident. The coroner has deemed it an accidental death.

The Shelburne Police also noted that their portion of the investigation is drawing to a close.
