It was a game that really didn’t see a lot of movement on the gridiron, but the only thing that mattered in the end was the Orangeville Outlaws Varsity division team left the field with a 14-7 win over the TNT Express at Orangeville District Secondary.
Both teams had trouble gaining ground in the first quarter – bogged down by good defensive posturing on both sides.
The Outlaws were first to light up the score board late in the first quarter when Zack Pembry had a huge gain to give the O-vill squad a first down and set up the field position for a try at the goal.
Quarterback Sean Clapperton went for the pass and delivered to Pembry who scored to give the Outlaws a 6-0 lead.
Both squads were again held on the field by a solid defence in the second quarter and on the last down, the Outlaws were forced to punt to get out of their end.
Returning for the second half, Orangeville made some good gains including a first down when receiver Connor Reiners snagged a pass to bring the Outlaws down field.
The Orangeville defence stepped up when two Outlaws fumbles were recovered by the Express and the Outlaws defence managed to shut them down on both attempts.
Moving into the final quarter, the Express took a one point lead after a long pass into the end zone tied the game and a successful convert gave them the point advantage for a 7-6 game.
The Outlaws took the game back when Clapperton broke through the pack for a 60 yard gain that dropped the squad deep into the end.
O-ville’s Michael McPherson crashed through the line to score and Clapperton got the extra two points on the convert.
With two minutes left on the clock the Outlaws took possession on a pass interception which pretty much ended TNT’s chance for a comeback.
The game ended 14-7 to give the Outlaws Varsity team their second win of the season.
At the mid season mark, the Vasity squad has a 2-2 record and is in third place in the OMFL standings.
The Varsity team will have two games on the road against Niagara and Vaughan over the next two weeks.
They return to their home turf at ODSS on Sunday, July 6, to host the Cambridge Lions.
The kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
