Outlaws JVs going to OMFL championship

The Orangeville Outlaws Junior Varsity team will be going to the Ontario Minor Football League championship after a stellar semi-final win over the TNT Express on Sunday, July 26, at Mel Mitchell Athletic Fields in Beeton.

“Our offence came out pretty good to start the game. We were prepared to ground and pound the ball all day,” Said Outlaws coach Adam Hughes. “There was a real defensive battle. It was a stalemate in the second half and we got lucky in the first and got those points from our offence.”

With a 17-4 lead late in the game, the Express scored a touchdown to make it 17-10 and started a late game push to make another goal and tie the game but the Outlaws held them off for the final three minutes.

“We told our players that’s why they were running and doing push-ups in practice all year was for one drive and all they had to do was finish that drive and they had the game,” Hughes said. “They put in the work in practices and they came out in the game and did the same thing.”

The Outlaws started the game with a solid offensive display when running back Lino De Vita ran for a first down at the one yard line.

Jeriah Calladares followed up with a drive through the middle that put the O-ville squad on the scoreboard.

The Outlaws ramped it up in the first quarter when Dorian Best snagged an interception on an Express pass for the turnaround and quarterback Chris Marsh ran for a first down to place the Orangeville team in scoring position.

Marsh scored the second TD on the next play.

The Outlaws defence held tough in the second quarter including a good effort from Luke Russell who managed to break through the Express line twice for back to back quarterback sacks.

The Express was able to gain some ground late in the half and decided to kick a field goal to get some points.

From there the game became a defensive battle for the Outlaws.

With the three minute flag up, the Express got their only touchdown of the game after going to the throwing game and moving down field. They scored on a long pass into the end zone.

With the clock clicking down the Outlaws completed the job by stopping any effort from the Express to get back in the game with another touchdown.

The Outlaws came to the game after winning their quarter-final game against the Etobicoke Eagles on Thursday, July 23.

They had a good year ending the regular season with a 5-3 record and in this game they defeated the second seed Express who lost only one game all season.

The Outlaws will now go on to face the Niagara Spears in the OMFL championship game.

The Spears are undefeated for the season but that doesn’t mean they aren’t beatable.

Last time the two teams met the Outlaws scored 44 points against them. If the Outlaws can play the same defensive game as they played on Sunday, they have a very good chance of being the 2015 Junior Varsity champions.
