The Orangeville Outlaws Varsity team won their final game of the regular season, leaving the field at Orangeville District Secondary School with a 28-6 victory over the Vaughan Rebels on Sunday, July 20.
The win means the Varsity squad has secured a berth in the Ontario Minor Football League playoffs after ending the season with a 4-4 record and a second place standing in the division.
Getting off to a good start, the Outlaws opened the scoring in the first quarter when Sean Clapperton took the hand-off and dodged several defenders in the pack to cross the goal.
Jake Smith placed the ball through the uprights for the extra point.
The second quarter saw the Vaughan squad held at centre field by a strong O-ville defence including a pass interception by Evan Bryk.
Clapperton got his second TD of the game in the second quarter on a run to the right to score.
The Outlaws were leading 21-0 at the half when QB Jake Smith made the pass to Zack Pembry who crossed the line for the third touchdown of the game.
It was one of the few passes completed by either team during a game which was played in the rain for the first half and created some slippery situations when it came to ball control.
Clapperton scored again in the third quarter to give the Outlaws a lead that basically ended the game at that point.
Vaughan got on the scoreboard late in the half to avoid the shut-out after a player broke away and had a long run down the sidelines.
After eight games, the Outlaws Varsity squad is 4-4 for the season and will face the Niagara Spears in the in first game of the playoffs.
The Cambridge Lions ended the regular season in first place with an undefeated 8-0 record.
If the Outlaws can win their next game they will be off to the championship game to be held at Esther Shiner Stadium in Toronto on Sunday, August 3.
The Varsity championship game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
