62-6 finish on Sunday
The Orangeville Outlaws Junior Varsity squad gave the Hamilton Steelers a good dose of small town talent Sunday (June 7) afternoon at Westside Secondary School.
The JV game got underway with a 1:00 p.m. start and a lot better football weather than the rainy Sunday they had to play through last week.
The Outlaws came out like gangbusters scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter to command the game and shock the Steelers who had trouble catching up to Orangeville ball carriers.
First quarter O-ville TD’s came from Lino De Vita, Mason Corrie, and Chris Marsh.
After being held in their own end early in the second quarter, the Steeler had to punt to get out of a hole and the Outlaws took possession of the ball at the 30 yard line.
Orangeville’s Jeriah Calladares scored when the Outlaws line punched a big hole in the Hamilton defence forming a flying wedge to let Calladares through.
The Outlaws were again on offence when Justin Feetham snagged an interception on a Hamilton pass. Calladares got his second TD of the game late in the quarter.
With the three minute warning on the half, Orangeville’s Tafari Mckenzie scored the sixth touchdown of the game.
“Our blocking was good, that was one of the better things we did,” Said Outlaws fullback Harold Van der Veen. “I think they were just tired at the end and we wore them out.”
The run of the game took place early in the second half when Jacob MacGarrity had a wild 60 yard dash down the sidelines shaking off several Hamilton players and going between others to cross the goal.
Lino De Vita got his second TD of the game late in the third quarter.
Hamilton avoided the shut-out with a single touchdown on a long pass and a run to the end zone.
The final O-ville touchdown came last in the half when Harold Van der Veen crashed through the middle to score.
The final was 62-6 for Orangeville.
Orangeville safety and place kicker Ian Early scored eight points on converts for the day kicking the ball between the uprights eight times on nine attempts for the game.
The Outlaws Junior Varsity team will be on the road for two games. First they travel to North Bay on Saturday, June 13, then to Beeton on Sunday, June 21, to meet the TNT Express.
They will be back at their home field at Westside on Sunday, July 5, to host the Oshawa Hawkeyes.
That game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
