Orangeville Tennis Club gets ready for the new season with clean-up day and open house

By Brian Lockhart

The Orangeville Tennis Club had its annual clean-up day and open house on Saturday, April 23, to get the courts ready for the new season and welcome people interested in joining the club and playing some tennis.

The sport is very popular in the region and the courts get a lot of use when the weather is nice.

“Today is our club house clean-up and open house,” explained Club president, Rose Brett. “New members and returning members can come out and register, or if they have questions about the Club, they can come out and have a look.”

The clean-up day has members putting up the windscreens on court fences, putting up the nets, and doing a general effort to make sure the courts will be clean and playable.

The Club has been playing for the past couple of years, however, due to the pandemic, they have not had competition with other Clubs in the region. Club competition will return this year.

“We're busy here on Monday nights,” Rose explained. “Our Club Pro, Mike Soden, runs ‘live ball', and it is full for the month of May. He runs four courts at four different times slots – someone will feed the ball and you're constantly hitting. You get instruction on how to improve your play. Our house like Tuesday night, is already full. Since COVID we haven't been able to play other clubs, but this year we are back with inter-club play. On Thursdays, during the day we have ‘freedom 55' and that's returning this year. We also plan on doing some socials and tournaments this year.”

The club has a new structure on the courts this year. Thanks to a grant from the Town, a new section was added on the east side of the courts to provide an area for storing gear while playing as well as seating.

The Club is always welcoming to new players who want to join and learn to play tennis or experienced players who have enjoyed the sport for years.
