The Town of Orangeville received a rating of 5 Blooms – Bronze and a special mention for Bravery Garden during the 2022 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Victoria, British Columbia. The Town of Orangeville participated in the Circle of Excellence – Evaluated category.
Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – regarding the following criteria: Community Appearance, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape and Plant & Floral Displays.
Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Berta Briggs and Larry Hall wrote:
“The Bravery Garden is a new garden honouring the courage, duty and compassion of Canadian Soldiers, especially those who fought in Afghanistan. The entry to the garden has a beautiful, engraved stone to identify the purpose and meaning of the garden. There are hand carved poppies on a cement bench. The center of the garden has an incredible statue of a young solder kneeling with two Afghani children. A well-designed paved walkway invites visitors into this amazing setting that is surrounded by tall grasses and poppies. A wonderful site for those walking to spend a quiet moment but also a great sight for those driving by on the nearby road.”
All those involved in the Communities in Bloom program can be proud of their efforts, benefitting all of society by providing real and meaningful ways to mitigate climate change
