Orangeville Outlaw player signs with Waterloo University

Anyone who follows local gridiron football will probably recognize the name Van der Veen.

Roy Van der Veen, a Grand Valley resident, was a star player with the Orangeville Outlaws Football Club, where he excelled at carrying the ball for a TD.

Roy’s speed, skill, and determination on the field earned him the respect of his teammates, coaches, and the fans who came out to watch the game.

In high school, Roy spent his entire career as a running back on the Robert F. Hall Wolfpack team in Caledon.

His skill and ability earned him the attention of university scouts, and he got a call from Waterloo University.

Representatives from the University arrived at Robert F. Hall on Friday, Feb. 10. They held a ceremony in the school’s cafeteria where Roy signed a letter of intent to play football with the Waterloo Warriors.

At the ceremony, Roy’s Varsity football coach, Jonathan Beresford, praised the running back’s “football IQ, toughness, skill, selflessness, and accountability.”

Roy will attend the University of Waterloo – St. Jeomr’es College in September, where he will be pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Business.

U of W Warriors associate head coach a recruiting coordinator Darrell Adams believes Roy will ‘fit our offensive schemes’ as a ‘coachable student-athlete.

During the signing ceremony, Roy’s family and over 100 friends and teammates attended to wish him well in his school and football endeavours.
