Orangeville A’s give up early lead – loss to Niagara

With the NBLC playoffs getting closer, the Orangeville A’s went into Friday (Apr. 15) nights game against the Niagara River Lions looking to come out on the plus side, but when the final buzzer sounded they had to settle for a 119-108 loss after giving up an early first quarter lead.

After taking a 9-0 lead early in the first quarter the A’s kept ahead with Orangeville power forward Just Moss hitting ten points for the quarter.

Moss went on to score 22 points and eight rebounds for the game.

The River Lions fought back in the second quarter, catching up then moving ahead at the 7:42 mark with a two point 38-36 lead.

At the end of the half the River Lions outscored the A’s 30-17 in the second quarter to end the half with a 54-48 lead.

The Orangeville squad had trouble hitting the hoop in the third quarter and at the buzzer Niagara was leading 88-80.

The A’s rebounded in the final quarter trimming the gap to as little as two points a the midway mark but the River Lions pulled ahead late in the game to widen the score and left with a 119-108 win.

A’s guard, Louis Munks was the A’s player of the game netting 27 points.

The A’s travelled to London the following night to meet the Lightning.

At the end of the first quarter the A’s found themselves facing an uphill battle  trailing 37-16.

At the half the A’s were down 27 points with London going ahead 65-38 and putting all the pressure on the Orangeville squad to come out hard in the second half and get back into the game.

The third quarter saw the A’s improve their pace of play with Erik Copes having his highest scoring quarter of the season with 11 points. He finished the night with 17 points and six rebounds.

The Lightning went on to take their biggest lead with a 31 point gap and a 95-64 score at the end of the quarter.

Going into the fourth quarter the A’s couldn’t slow done the London offence.

The game ended with a 129-97 win for the Lightning.

After the weekend the A’s have a 12-25 record.

The London Lighting are leading the Central Division of the NBLL  with a 23-13 record.

They are followed by the Windsor Express in second place with 19 wins behind them.

In third place the Niagara River Lions have 16 wins after 21 games.

Over all, the Halifax Hurricanes of the Atlantic Division lead the League with 25 wins and nine losses.

The A’s will return to their home court at the Athlete Institute this Friday, April 22, to host the London Lighting.

The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
