The Monora Lawn Bowling Club is hosting an open house and inviting the public to come out and see what the sport is all about.

Located next to Monora Park, the club boasts a beautiful turf playing surface and clubhouse.

Lawn bowling is an outdoor sport where the object is to roll a biased or weighted ball so that it stops as close as possible to a smaller target ball called the jack.

When bowled, a lawn bowling bowl will curve on the playing field because the ball is weighted. The player must deliver the ball and take into account the amount of curve the ball will have, which is one of the major challenges of the game.

Lawn bowling can be played as singles or in other combinations with up to four players on a team.

“It’s a club open house,” explained the club’s president John Hooper. “We’re trying to encourage people who are not members to come out and give the game a try. They might like, and hopefully become members. It’s a free event. They’ll be able to speak to some members and get a chance to throw some bowls and see what it’s like. Anyone who’s interested in giving the game a try or signing up – everyone’s invited.”

The club is hoping to attract younger people to the sport. Lawn bowling has gained a reputation as a sport for an older crowd. However, this is an exciting and skilled sport that younger people should enjoy.

In the U.K., where the sport is very popular, there isn’t as much of an age stigma attached to the game.

“It’s good exercise and we usually play in beautiful weather,” John said. “It’s a very social sport.”

The club will host their open house on Saturday, May 6, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

If you are interested in trying lawn bowling, show up at the club next to Monora Park for the open house, and there will be someone there to introduce you to the game, and you can try it.
