Mono takes steps toward outlawing certain animals

No, Mono residents, you won’t be able to get that kangaroo for a family pet.
Likewise shot down is anybody’s novel idea to raise zebras, rhinos, tigers, lions, and a whole list of other exotic animals and insects within Mono.
At its Aug. 23 public meeting, town council gave a first reading to the new Prohibited Animals Bylaw. It’s an issue that was first broached in April. And council received a draft of the legislation in July.
“It [similar bylaws] shows up quite frequently in other municipalities,” said Fred Simpson, the town council clerk.
The bylaw will return for council’s consideration after a suitable period for public comment.
Among the prohibited animals are alligators, crocodiles, seals and walruses. Also forbidden are bats, coyotes, and wolf-dog hybrids. Chimpanzees and gorillas are not welcomed as well.
Something called coatimundi and cacomistles are also on the list of animals to be banned.
Fun fact: Coatimundi look like a cross between a raccoon and a monkey. And they’re touted to be dandy pets that will get along with domestic cats and dogs. Cacomistles, apparently, are known to be good mousers.
Councillor Ralph Manktelow defended the humble sugar glider, which is a tiny gliding possum. It’s also on the list.
“It doesn’t seem like they’re a particularly dangerous animal,” he said. “They’re in line with a pet rat, I think.”
