Mono seeking torch bearer for 2015 Pan Am relay

December 17, 2014   ·   0 Comments

The Town of Mono is seeking a torch bearer for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Torch Relay, which will pass through the town on its journey to Toronto for the launch of the Pan Am Games. Mono will be one of 300 communities across the country given an opportunity to be represented in the relay.

A torch bearer will be selected by the Town to run on behalf of its residents, when the flame passes through on the portion of its journey from Alliston to Orangeville.

Council has asked for members of the community to provide nominations for them to consider, and can be provided on behalf of the person themselves or someone they know, so long as they fit the following criteria:

• Must be at least 13 years of age on or before May 30, 2015

• Be a Canadian citizen or legal resident of Canada

• Be a resident of the Town of Mono

• Be able to run/walk/wheel the assigned 200-metre segment on the assigned day.

• Wear the provided torchbearer uniform (without any other branded clothing) for the duration of your torchbearer experience.

• Consent to undertake and successfully complete a security background check.

• Sign the participation waiver on or before your assigned relay day.

• Agree to having your profile and image published or released by TO2015, sponsors or media for the purposes of publicizing the Toronto 2015 Torch Relay and/or the Town of Mono.

• Cannot be an elected official or candidate running for public or political office.

• Cannot be an employee or contractor of TO2015 or the Town of Mono.

During Mono’s first council meeting, held on December 9, Councillor Ralph Manktelow asked about the possibility of someone participating in an activity other than walking to best represent some of the athletic and recreational hobbies that many people take advantage of in the town.

“Can we look at the possibility of our torchbearer being a biker, hiker or rollerblader, considering that there will be a rider on Horseback for the event site portion?” he asked. “I like the idea of a hiker or a biker having the opportunity to represent us.”

Town CAO Keith McNenly said that while he hadn’t specifically asked about those activities, he didn’t foresee it as a problem, but could look into it.

Once the nominations have been submitted, Council will have the opportunity to put three names forward to be considered, suggesting their first choice as well as two alternates. The final decision however, will be made by the Pan Am Torch Relay.

Nominations are open now, and the town will be accepting them until 2 p.m. on January 8.
