Junior C Northmen advance to West finals

The Orangeville Junior C Northmen advanced to the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League West finals with a three-game sweep over the third place Wilmot Wild.

The series started with game one on the road in Wilmot. The Wild held 2-1 and 5-3 leads after the first and second periods, but the Northmen would respond with six goals in the third period to take a 9-8 win.

Zack Dorval paced the offence with three goals, with Scott Claphan added two goals and an assist. Other goal scorers were Luke Downard, Ian Starr, Nick Haladuick and Josh Presley. J

Andrew Wilson was outstanding in net, making big saves and controlling rebounds all game.

Game two switched back to Tony Rose arena on Saturday, July 9 where Wilmot would once again get the early lead. The Wild scored the only goal of the period, but the Northmen got back into the game scoring six goals in 8:18 to begin the second period.

The Wild clawed back to get within one goal on two occasions.

The Northmen defence used transition to pick up a couple of third period goals for an 8-6 win.

Luke Downard led Orangeville scoring with two goals and two assists. Graydon Stokes added two goals. Aidan Toogood picked up one goal and one assist, while Logan Marshall, Caden Wasson and Jack Fitzpatrick rounded out the scoring with a goal each.

The Northmen looked to complete the sweep on the home floor two nights later.

Wilmot once again opened the scoring. The Northmen responded and took a 5-2 lead in the second period. The Wild added two in the second and tied the game with 1:27 left in the game to force overtime. Orangeville stamped their ticket to the West Finals outscoring Wilmot 2-0 in overtime to walk away with a 7-5 win.

Aidan Toogood led the attack with two goals and Logan Marshall as well as Nick Devins chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Rounding out the scoring was Zack Dorval, Ian Starr and Graydon Stokes with a goal each.

Wilson was stellar in net once again, picking up player of the game honours.

The Northmen now move on to face the Fergus Thistles in a best of five series. Game one was in Fergus on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

Game two returns to Tony Rose arena on Friday, July 22, with a 7:30 p.m. start.
