Norhtmen Jr BOne game on the plus side and one loss in this past week’s schedule has the Orangeville Junior B Northmen leading the Mid West Division of the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League with five wins after seven games – good foar 10 points so far.

The squad hosted the Wallaceburg Red Devils on Sunday (May 11) and left with a 7-4 win after outscoring the visitors 5-2 in the second period to lead the game 6-2 going into the final 20 minutes of play.

The Northmen returned to the Alder Street arena the following night (Mon., May 12) to take on the Elora Mohawks.

After two periods of serious competition, the Mohawks got the edge in the third period scoring three times to make it a 8-4 game with just under eight minutes left on the clock.

A final empty netter sealed the deal for the Elora squad and the Northmen had to settle for the loss.

“We had a really nice win last night, and we were hoping to carry that momentum into tonight,” said Northmen head coach Bruce Codd after Monday’s game. “We knew these were going to be two tough games against these two teams. They are teams that are always in the playoffs every year. Obviously, Elora’s probably our biggest rival. I’m not happy with the result tonight, but I thought the first 40 minutes was our best 40 minutes that we played all year. The pace of the game was really hot compared to what we’ve seen so far. If I was a fan watching that game, I probably would have been pretty entertained.”

The first two periods of Monday’s game saw the Northmen keeping pace or outplaying the Elora squad, they just couldn’t find the back of the net.

“After one, I thought we should have been up four or five to one,” Codd said. “We had an opportunity with out powerplay to probably win that game, but it just didn’t happen.”

The Northmen are not tied for fourth place over all in the 26 team OJBLL.

The squad will get a ten day break before going on the road to face the Niagara Thunderhawks on Saturday, May 24.

They return to the Alder Street arena on Monday, May 26, to host the St. Catharines Spartans.

Game time is 8:00 p.m.
