8-6 win over Burlington Chiefs

After playing to a 5-5 tie against the Burlington Chiefs on Friday (June 5) night, the Rayburn Construction Junior A Northmen stepped it up in the third period to outscore the Chiefs 3-1 in the final frame for the win.

Orangeville’s Matt Vangalen scored the game opener at 1:31 into the first period.

After going being 2-1 to the Chiefs, Northmen Owen MacDonald tied it up, followed by a go ahead goal from Dallas Bridle to make it a 3-2 game at the end of the first period.

It was again a tie game early in the second when Burlington notched a goal :57 into the frame.

Two more O-ville goals from Riley Thompson and Lucas Ducharme gave the Northmen a lead – but not for long – when Burlington scored two shorthanded goals just 35 seconds apart to again make it a tie game at five.

When neither team getting ahead, the game entered the final period even, but the Northmen stepped up their game with a fast and furious 20 minutes of play.

“We kind of sloppy at the beginning of the game, but as the game went on we picked it up,” Said Northmen Brandon Slade. “Obviously it wasn’t out strongest game but we got what we wanted – we got the two points.”

It was a closer game than the Northmen probably expected. The Chiefs arrived at Tony Rose arena with a 4-4 record and a seventh place standing in the 11 team League.

The two shorted handed goals against the Northmen was a wakeup call for the O-ville team to get back on their game.

“We’ve got to stay on our man and keep it in close because we know they’re going to attack the net when they can,” Slade said of what the squad did to turn it around.

“We’re a hard working team, the most hard working team in this League. When it comes down to the last 20 minutes we know we got it because we work hard,” Slade said of going into the final period in a tie game. “When we were one-up late in the game obviously we want to use the 30. We don’t want to attack the net but we also don’t want to play soft. We want to take it to them. Obviously another goal would help so we don’t want to push it back the other way and they get a fast break on us.”

The Northmen finished the night with three goals from Davis Neal, Ian Mackay, and Lucas Ducharme for the 8-6 win.

The squad didn’t fare so well on Sunday when the they travelled to Barrie to take on the Lakeshores.

The Northmen scored a single in all three periods in a low scoring game that ended with a 5-3 O-ville loss to Barrie.

After the weekend the Northmen are in second place in the League with 13 points and  a 6-2-1 record.

Six Nations is currently in first place with 16 points.

The Northmen will be back in Orangeville on Friday, June 12. There will be a venue change for this game. Instead of Tony Rose arena, the June 12, game will be played at the Alder Street arena.

Game time is 8:00 p.m.
