5-5 win over Cobourg

It took two periods of overtime hockey, but the Orangeville Junior Flyers left with a win Saturday (Dec. 12) night when they hosted the Cobourg Cougars at the Alder Street arena in Orangeville.

The Flyers got the jump in the scoring when James Ranson got the opener at 10:41 into the first period.

The Cougars responded early in the second period scoring at 1:34 into the frame then followind up with a second goal less than a minute later to take a one goal lead.

O-ville’s Colin Rigney tied it up at the midway mark in the frame but again the Cobourg squad went ahead less than two minues later.

The Flyers turned it up a notch late in the period with a marker from Zack Lyons on a power play followed by another goal from Travis Brown with less than a minute remaining in the period to give the Flyers a one goal lead with the third period still to go.

The Cougars scored the only third period goal to make it a 4-4 game and both teams went for the tie breaker but with no more scoring the squads had to regroup and come out for overtime to settle the game.

After playing one over time period with no goals scored the teams returned for a second go.

This time Orangeville’s John DiLorenzo scored at just 30 seconds into the overtime period to give the Flyers the win.

It was win number 17 for the Orangeville squad who now have a 17-15-1 record for the season. That includes two losses that came in overtime.

The Buffalo Jr Sabres are leading the West Division of the OJHL with 49 points after 23 games.

The Georgetown Raiders are in second place with 43 points and a 20-13 record.

In third place the Burlington Cougars have 38 points and an 18-14 record.

Overall in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Trenton Golden Hawks are in in first place with 58 points and a 28-3-1 record.

The Golden Hawks suffered one of their losses to the Flyers back on October 10, when the Flyers delivered a 3-1 win.

The Kingson Voyageurs are hanging on to second place in the League with 50 points and 24 wins behind them after 34 games played.

The Flyers won’t have a home game this Saturday.

They will be on the road on Wednesday, December 30. to take on the Chargers in Mississauga a the Port Credit arena.

The Flyers will be back on home ice at the Alder Street arena in Orangeville on Thursday, December 31, to host the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the South Division.

This will be an afternoon game with the puck drop scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
