The Orangeville Junior A Flyers tipped their record to the plus side after a 2-1 win over the Oakville Blades on Saturday (Jan. 10) night at the Alder Street arena in Orangeville.
The Oakville squad from the South Division of the OJHL came to the ice with an almost identical record to the Flyers.
Oakville was riding on a 22-19 record compared to the Flyers who came to the game at 20-20.
After coming up short in the first period and allowing a single Oakville goal, the O-ville squad returned for the second period and tied the game on a goal from Colin Rigney at 11:02 into the frame.
In a game that saw few powerplays – Oakville took eight minutes in minors to match Orangeville’s time in the box – the teams concentrated on playing the game.
Just when it looked like they were heading for overtime, Orangeville’s Aleks Rapp beat Oakville netminder Daniel Mannella with just 11 seconds left on the clock.
It was win number 21 for the Orangeville squad who have been around .500 for most of the season and now have 45 points and are in second place in the West Division.
The Flyers returned to home ice the following day, Sunday, January 11, to host the Cobourg Cougars in an afternoon game.
The game resulted in the Flyers going back to a .500 record when they came up short losing 6-3 to the visitors.
The Flyers were behind 2-0 at the end of the first period when Cobourg scored two unanswered goals.
Trailing 3-0 early in the second frame the Flyers lit up their die of the board on a powerplay gaol from Ryan DaSilva at the midway mark.
Two more Cougars followed to make it a 4-1 game going into the final 20 minutes.
Another powerplay goal by Cobourg stretched the lead to 6-1, but the Flyers rallied with two more goals in the third to end it a 6-3.
After the weekend the Flyers are in second place in the West Division with 45 points – 15 point behind Georgetown but 15 points ahead of third place Buffalo.
The Flyer will be in Oakville on Friday, January 16.
They return to home ice at the Alder Street arena on Saturday, January 17, to host the Pickering Panthers.
Game time is 7:00 p.m.
