GMOHL playoffs underway

The local Junior C hockey loop has entered the playoffs with tight line-up that is going to produce some really exciting and rough and tumble hockey over the next few weeks.

The Erin Shamrocks and the Midland Flyers failed to make the cut this year.

Only eight teams in the ten team league were eligible this season.

The season came down to the final few games as Erin, Midland, the Fergus Devils and the Orillia Terriers battled it out right to the end to gain the extra point needed to gain a playoff berth.

Orillia and Fergus squeezed in with only a point separating them.

Erin lost out by a single point to Fergus to end their season.

On the top of standings the Alliston Hornets finished the regular season in first place to capture the Georgian Mid Ontario Hockey League championship for the 2014 / 15 season. The Hornets ended with 66 points and a 32-8 record including one shoot-out loss and one overtime loss.

“Anybody can beat anybody in this League,” Is how Alliston GM Rick Bartlett summed up the situation going into the 2015 playoffs. “I think every round is going to be different. Every round is going to be tight – it’s going to be a dog fight for the final.”

The Stayner Siskins finished in second place with 62 points and a 28-12 record.

The big success story this season is the return of the Huntsville Otters. Last year the Otters won only eight games all season. They year they returned as a rebuilt and strong team who finished in third place after winning 24 games.

In the middle of the pack the Caledon Golden Hawks and Schomberg Cougars have been neck-and-neck all season with the Hawks finished a point ahead of the Cougars when the final games were played out.

The Penetang Kings started off the year in first place with a nine game winning streak but went into a steady decline in November and December when they won only three of 13 games to finish the season in fourth place.

The GMOHL playoffs got underway on Monday (Feb. 2) night with the Penetang Kings winning game one of their series over Caledon.

The Alliston / Fergus series started on Wednesday, February 4.

Stayner and Orillia will start their series tonight, Thursday, February 5, along with the Schomberg / Huntsville series set to get underway in Schomberg.
