The Orangeville Giants played their home opener on the road in Mansfield in a scheduled double header against the Cubs on Saturday, May 6.
Despite a week long weather pattern of constant rain, the two teams put out the effort to get the first game of the season on the record books.
Most outdoor sports were canceled over the week including several North Dufferin Baseball League games when conditions made the diamonds un-playable.
The Mansfield diamond weathered it pretty well though as its crushed gravel infield supplied enough drainage that water wasn’t pooling on the surface.
The outfield was described as ‘not too bad’ by the players considering many other sports field in the region were loaded up ankle deep.
The Giants are finalists from last year’s championship after having a stellar playoff run and facing the New Lowell Knights in the final series.
The game was played in a light drizzle for the duration.
The Giants got their bats moving early this season with three home runs recorded for the game.
Carson Burns and Nick Hodgson both hit two-run home runs with Drew Huerter getting a solo home run.
The game ended with a 9-1 win for the Giants in their first outing of the year.
After the first game a decision was made not to continue with the second game of the scheduled double header as by the end of the first game the clay pitcher’s mound had been reduced to a mushy mess in the middle of the outfield.
There are 15 teams in the Senior division of the NDBL this year. Several opening games had to be rescheduled to due the weather and playing conditions.
The Giants will be on their home diamond at Princess of Wales Park in Orangeville on Friday, May 12. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
