Orangeville blanks New Lowell in game two
The Orangeville Giants are continuing their impressive playoff run with a 2-0 win over the top seeded New Lowell Knights at Springbrook Park in Orangeville on Tuesday (Aug. 18) night.
The Giants are fresh from their first round victory over the Aurora Jays after taking that series in four games to earn the right to advance to the second round.
The second round series got off to a rocky start when the Giants had to forfeit game one in New Lowell on Sunday (Aug. 16) after failing to field a full team.
The Orangeville team knew they wouldn’t have a full roster due to player’s work commitments and informed League officials, however the League made the ruling that a weekend game must take place. The result was a forfeit win for New Lowell and the Giants were down two points before they played their first game.
Retuning to the diamond at Springbrook Park on Tuesday night, the first couple of innings produced no hits for either team.
Orangeville opened the scoring when a bunt bought enough time to bring a Giants player across the plate. The game turned into a real defensive battle with little action on the bases until the sixth inning when Nathan Drury got a base hit to start off the Orangeville at-bat.
A follow up hit to shallow centre field by Kevin Buck put two Giants on base.
The go-ahead run came when Scott Seltzer dropped one to centre to allow time for another Giants run to give the squad a two run lead with one inning to go.
The Knights challenged in the final inning getting two men on base but the game ended with a fly to shallow centre field.
“I’m really happy with the outcome,” Said Giants shortstop Mitchell Pike. “Unfortunately we had to forfeit the first game, so this is a huge win for us. We had a couple of errors out there but we battled through it and got it done.”
The New Lowell team finished the regular season in first place with a 20-3-3 record and averaged seven runs a game. The finished the season with an eight game winning streak to claim the top spot.
“We played well, we played really well,” Said Giants catcher Drew Huerter. “We had a couple of errors, but you know what? I think that’s just due to us being a little nervous. We’re a young team, we’re facing the top team in the League and we just tightened up a little bit. Hodgson (Nick) pitched fantastic, he did his job. They hit the ball but they hit it exactly where we wanted it to be.”
Game three of the series is scheduled to get underway in New Lowell tonight (Thu., Aug. 20). The series will return to Orangeville on Friday, August 21, for game four at Princess of Wales Park. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
