10-4 loss to New Lowell in round two final game
The Orangeville Giants completed the 2015 season after going farther than they originally planned by facing the number one seed in round two of the North Dufferin Baseball League playoffs.
It’s was the newly reformed team’s first year back in the League.
“My goal for the whole season was to make the playoffs,” Said coach Nathan Drury. “That was the over all goal. When we had the shot at the playoffs and saw who we could face – up against Aurora (number two seed) – us getting through that series was beyond our expectations.”
The squad ended the regular season with a 12-12-2 record and a seventh place finish in the league.
Only the top eight teams make the playoffs.
The standing had the Giants up against the second place Aurara Jays in the first round, who went 19-7 for the year.
In a well played effort, the O-ville team dispatched Aurora in four games to set up the second round series against the top seeded New Lowell Knights.
The Knights ended the regular season with a 20-3-3 record.
The series got off to a rocky start when the Giants forfeited game one after not being able to field a full roster for the first weekend game due to player work commitments. Despite appealing to League officials the team was told the game must be played on the weekend or a forfeit would be recorded.
“They were first place, they lost three games all year. If they really wanted to steal a first game and take the win from us they must have been that scared of us,” Dury said.
Game two of the series ended with a 2-0 win for the Giants to make it an even se- ries.
Game three resulted in a 2-2 tie to keep the series tied with each team having three points – two for win and one for the tie.
Game four saw the Knights leave with a 12-2 win to take the series back to New Lowell for game five.
The Giants rallied and left with a 13- 11 win to force game six in Orangeville on Monday (Aug. 24) night at Princess of Wales Park.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when when New Lowell brought in two runs on a double hit to the left field fence.
The Knights took a big lead in the fifth inning with another double that advanced a player to third base then brought in two
more runs on a hit to the hole between centre and left field.
They followed up with a three run home run from Allan Brownridge that gave the Knights a seven run lead with with two in- nings left to go.
Orangeville’s Nick Hodgson scored the first Giants run after stealing third base then making it home on a bad throw on the play.
The Giants started to challenge in the sixth inning when the bases were loaded on a walk and Nathan Drury had a nice hit to bring in two more Orangeville runs.
The final inning had no men on base and the game ended with a 10-4 win for New Lowell.
“They took that first game from us, but we lost the games we lost,” Dury said. “There was a couple of misplays in the outfield that ended up having runners ad- vance. If we would have made those outs we could have possibly got out with less runs.”
New Lowell will now go on to play the Ivy Leafs in the NDBL championship series.
Game one is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, in New Lowell with an 11:00 a.m. start.
Game two will get underway the follow- ing day, Sunday, August 30, in Ivy.
That game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
