With five weeks to go before he steps into the ring for his 14th pro fight, Orangeville’s Steve Franjic is stepping up his training regimen.
Franjic is undefeated in the pro ring winning 12 fights and taking one draw over his career – that includes seven KO’s.
His last fight on June 13, at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre in Montreal ended with a TKO when he stopped opponent Andrew Gardiner in the fifth round.
“It was a big win,” Franjic said. “After that I took a little time to relax.”
Over the past few months there have been a few offers but Franjic’s team didn’t think the matches would work out.
“We had a few opportunities (to fight), but things just didn’t materializes,” He said.
In the fight game, setting up a match includes a lot of behind the scenes work with promoters, managers, and scheduling.
Over the summer Franjic said he has been training and “staying in decent shape,” but with a new fight on the schedule, the training goes into high gear.
“I’m into heavy training now,” He said. “We’re doing sparring, running, heavy weights, you name it, we do it.”
Boxers usually slow it down the week or two prior to the actual fight to avoid risking some kind of injury in the ring.
As for his opponent, Franjic will be up against Roberto “El Volcán” Santos who hails from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
If he lives up to his nickname, Santos may be known for his explosive ability in the ring.
El Volcán is Spanish for ‘the volcano.’
He comes to the bout with a 12-1 record including five bouts where he stopped his opponent before the final round.
“We’re expecting a tough fight,” Franjic said, adding he’s only seen “limited footage” of Santos in the ring.
On paper at least, these two fighters appear pretty evenly matched both in records, and age. Franjic is 27, Santos is 26.
The bout is scheduled for November 15, at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.
