Franjic out in the first round

“Silent” Steve Franjic’s return to the ring at Mississauga’s Hershey Centre on Saturday (Mar. 28) ended in disappointment for the Orangeville boxer when the fight was stopped at 1:15 into the first round.

Franjic was up against Ricardo Marcelo Ramallo – an Argentinian who came to the ring with a 16-6 record.

The scheduled eight round bout was barely underway when Franjic was caught with a jab-cross combination. Ramallo followed up with a left hook that dropped Franjic to the canvas.

Back on his feet, it appeared that Franjic had injured his knee. He was limping, and having trouble fending off Ramallo’s attack.

Realizing their fighter was in trouble, Franjic’s corner through in the towel but the referee didn’t see it and allowed the fight to continue.

Ramallo actually pointed to the towel when the two fighters were in a clinch. Finally one of Franjic’s men in the corner jumped into the ring and the fight was stopped.

It was the second fight in a row that Franjic has lost.

His last outing on November 15, ended with a TKO when opponent Alvaro Gaono caught him with a right and ended the fight in the third round.

The two losses are on top of a pro career that saw Franjic go 13 fights without a loss, including one bout in January 2012 that ended in a draw.

The evening at the Hershey Centre featured a seven card event.
