Four dead in 2 weekend collisions

Four persons lost their lives in collisions on Dufferin County highways during the weekend.

On Saturday evening about 9:30, 20-year-old Todd Zdeb of Orangeville died when his Toyota Camry was in collision with a motorhome on Dufferin 109 at the 13th line of East Garafraxa. The two occupants of the motorhome were taken to Headwaters Health Care Centre with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Then, at about 11 p.m. Sunday, a fiery crash at the intersection of Dufferin 10 (10 Sideroad) and the Mono-Amaranth Townline took three lives.

Dufferin OPP investigated both crashes. Spokesman Paul Nancekivell said the triple fatality resulted from a collision between a sedan and an SUV, with both ending up in ditches and one catching fire. 

OPP have now identified the three people who died in this collision. Travis Logan, 26 years of age of Alton, Marie Lessard 49 and Steven Ratz (her husband), 57 years, both of Amaranth, all succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene.

Police investigation so far reveals that southbound Volkswagen travelling on Mono Amaranth Town line  driven by Travis Logan failed to stop and collided with the  Jeep Liberty which was westbound on Dufferin County #10 driven by Steven Ratz.

OPP Traffic Collision Investigators were on the scene of both crashes, with the roads in question being closed for several hours.

Previously the scene of another fatality, the intersection between Dufferin 10 and the townline is a two-way stop for north-south traffic, unlike other intersections on the townline which are either four-way stops or give priority to north-south traffic.
