Early this morning, Twitter exploded with rumours that Future Shop announced it would be closing their doors Canada-Wide, with only some locations to be rebranded as Best Buys. The rumours were sparked by a message on the Future Shop website which read ‘Dear Valued Customer, Future Shop and Best Buy are consolidating under the Best Buy brand.’
Shortly after, the message was removed and replaced with one that read ‘The site is currently closed for a scheduled upgrade so we can improve the quality and speed of your shopping experience.’
By 10:30 however, the website was again showing information about the rebranding.
Although no major news outlets had reported on the closures at the time this article was written, employees and their friends began to take to Twitter around 8 a.m. about the announced closures.
At 8:30 this morning, a Citizen reporter had received confirmation from a local employee that they had been called into a meeting this morning. Some customers who had installations booked have confirmed that they were contacted about the closure and told the local Orangeville store would be re-branding into a Best Buy.
UPDATE 10:53 Saturday – a sign at the store now indicates the store will reopen April 4 as a Best Buy.
