Comparable or apples, oranges?

NOW THAT ORANGEVILLE COUNCIL has decided to proceed with getting information from the Ontario Provincial Police on the cost of having the force replace the Orangeville Police Service, it remains to be seen whether the information will be all that helpful.

Although the OPP has taken over municipal forces in nearby places like Fergus and Alliston, they already had been providing service in rural areas outside those towns, and in the case of Wellington County, Guelph continues to have its own police service.

As we see it, there’s little doubt that the most efficient and uniform type of police service for Dufferin would cover both urban and rural areas, and it would matter little whether the force doing the job was the OPP or a single municipal force.

One thing we do know is that at present both Orangeville and Shelburne have good local police forces.
