Coming: a plethora of local events this weekend

By Tabitha Wells -It seems as life goes back to normal for students and parents, so does the rest of the world. The next few weeks are filled with plenty of events, activities and gatherings to keep local members of the community organized, and help some great causes.

Here is a chronological summary of what’s coming up this weekend:

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

‘Sharpee Name Your Price Day’

7-Eleven will be hosting their first ever “Slurpee Name Your Price Day”, allowing customers the opportunity to pay what they want for a large Slurpee. The event will act as a fundraiser in support of Food Banks Canada, with 100 percent of proceeds going to support local food banks.

“We know that Slurpee fans like to give back so “Slurpee Name Your Price Day” gives our customers the perfect opportunity to do just that,” said Raj Kapoor, Vice President and General Manager of 7-Eleven Canada Inc.

According to the event’s press release, a $1 donation would provide breakfast for a full week, a $3 donation would provide enough snacks for every day at school for a child, and a $5 donation would provide dinners for a month for an individual in need. For the regular cost of a large Slurpee ($1.99), customers will be able to help share 14 meals for someone in need in their community.

Headwaters Arts Festival

The Headwaters Arts Festival will kick off at 7 p.m. at the SGI Caledon Centre with their annual Evening Art Gala and the Juried Art Show and Sale. The festival is filled with parties, performances, juried art shows, gallery openings, hands-on workshops and studio tours that celebrate the arts through the hills of Caledon, Dufferin and Erin each fall.

The Evening Art Gala will allow guests the opportunity to bid on artwork before it opens to the general public, and will include hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and entertainment. Tickets are $55 and are available online, in person at the Headwaters Arts Gallery at the Alton Mill Arts Centre or by phone at 519-943-1149.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

Friends for Life! walk

Orangeville and District OSPCA will be hosting their annual Friends for Life! Walk-a-Thon. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Alder Street. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. and carry participants through the west Orangeville trails. Event includes the walk, a number of fun activities for both walkers and pets, and the opportunity for fundraisers to join the TOP PAW Club and earn individual rewards based on the level of funds raisers.

20th Headwaters House Tour

This year is the 20th Anniversary of the Headwaters House Tour, a self-directed tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. that this year includes nine unique homes.

Tickets are $45, and can be purchased online at headwatershousetour.com or at various local retailers, also listed online. Your ticket is your passport with a map and brief description of each home. The ticket price includes a gourmet lunch at the Orangeville Agricultural Centre between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

New this year is an on line auction. www.32auctions.com/housetour. Even if you can’t come to the house tour you can bid on awesome silent auction items online. Remember to visit often. New items are added every week.

All proceeds go toward the purchase of hospital equipment at Headwaters Health Care Centre. The Province does not fund the capital cost of aquiring equipment, so this funding is absolutely critical.

CLD Open House

Community Living Dufferin (CLD) will be opening their doors from 12-4 as part of the Headwaters Arts Festival Tour, happening this weekend. The event will allow visitors to witness local talent, ability and passion from the people they support through various artistic mediums. The event will also double over as a Coffee Break in support of the Alzheimer’s Society, to help promote awareness and gain support for the cause.

Included in the event will be a live auction featuring one-of-a-kind art, warm beverages, baked goods, and an opportunity to further explore the creative works of the people CLD supports.

The CLD open house is only one of several on the Headwaters tour Saturday afternoon.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21

Ferguson Memorial Walk

The Ferguson Memorial Walk, in memory of Heidi Lee Ferguson nee Bogner, will be held at the Pavilion in the Island Lake Conservation Area starting at 8:30 a.m. Ms. Ferguson lost her life during a tragic domestic dispute with her estranged husband, who later took his own life, on September 12, 2009 in Orangeville. The walk is held annually to raise awareness and funds for Family Transition Place and the Headwaters White Ribbon Campaign.

The Walk team is still looking for volunteers for parking attendants, trail marshals, cleanup crew, and outgoing individuals to sell raffle tickets. Student volunteers will receive five volunteer hours, an event T-Shirt, wrist band and food.

The cost of the event is $20 to register, and participants can join as individuals or as part of a team.

Fund-raising fashion show

Art Wear Network will be hosting a charity fundraising fashion show at 12:30 p.m. in support of DAREarts at the Dufferin County Museum and Archives. The event will begin with lunch, catered by The Globe Restaurant, followed by the fashion show.

“The event is helping the public to be more aware of what DareArts does,” said Marilyn Field, Founder and President of DAREarts. “Kids can do great things to become stronger and better people with a voice through the arts. Fashion is just one of those voices, and just one of those ways that kids can find themselves, find a voice, and become stronger.”

Funds raised from the show will go to support DAREarts at-risk youth programs in the GTA, as well as their aboriginal programs in Northern Ontario. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased through the museum by phone at 1-877-941-7787 or by email at info@dufferinmuseum.com.

Cross-Canada kickoff

Does This Make My Asperger’s Look Big, a tour by local comedian Michael McCreary, will kick off this Sunday evening with a pre-show event at Fionn MacCools. The cross-country tour will consist of 14 performances by Mr. McCreary as he raises awareness about Asperger’s and Autism, and makes a documentary along the way.

The pre-tour performance will take place at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10, and Fionn MacCool’s recommends making reservations for the event.
