Buck pitches perfect game against New Lowell

The perfect game – it’s a very rare occurrence in baseball, but Orangeville Giants pitcher Kevin Buck managed to walk away from a Thursday, June 4, game against the first place New Lowell Knights after completing a game that few hurlers can put on their resume.

Twenty-one New Lowell players made it up to bat in the seven inning North Dufferin Baseball League Senior Division match. None made it on base. No base hits, no walks.

“That night, our defence was on. We didn’t make an error. Our short-stop Mitch Pike and our second baseman Greg Dodwell – they made some good plays,” Said Giants coach Nathan Drury, of the back-up Buck had on the mound. “Nick Hodgson our catcher, he called the perfect game from behind the plate. He knows the hitters,”

Drury said that part way through the game, he and the other players started realizing that up to that point, no New Lowell players had made it to base.

In true sportsmanlike fashion, (with traditional superstition) Drury said no one would talk about it because they didn’t want to jinx Buck.

“Around the fifth inning, I thought ‘I don’t think they have a hit yet,’” Buck said of his perspective on the mound. “I haven’t walked anyone yet, so I thought, lets just keep going in there and throwing pitches and see how the game is going. The defence was there for me the whole game. It was a good team effort. I thought if I keep throwing strikes, my defence would be there for me.”

They were, and when the game ended with a 0-0 tie, Buck left the mound with a historic game behind him.

A check with the North Dufferin Baseball League could produce no evidence of a perfect game on the record in the League.

When he’s not pitching, Buck takes his position as centre field for the Giants.
