ODSS avoids shut-out with late game TD
By Brian Lockhart
After allowing a touchdown early in the first quarter the Bears ran into trouble when the Guelph defence kept the Bears pinned at mid field.
After punting to get out of a hole, the Bears were back in possession on downs and started off with a good 40 yard run by Julian Leblanc.
The second quarter saw the Guelph team have success with the throwing game scoring twice on passes and once with a through-the-middle play to go ahead 27-0 at the end of the half with three successful converts.
“There was a lot of mistakes on both sides of the field. A lot of showboating and loud-mouthing. We had to keep it under control,” Said Bears defensive end Tim Dearsley.
Things got a little heated during one play ending with a Guelph player being ejected from the game.
“Right near the end of the game we were able to pick it up and get it back together as a team. We scored so we didn’t get shut out,” Dearsley said.
The second half saw the Gaels close in on the goal and they opted for a field goal for three points.
Guelph scored another TD early in the fourth quarter.
It was until the final quarter that the ODSS team put it all together a played a solid game that saw them advance down the field.
Receiver Josh Miller took a pass from quarterback Fisher Brown and scored the Bears only touchdown of the game.
A successful kick earned the team the extra point on the convert to end the game 36-7.
“Last week when we played (J.F.) Ross, (Sept. 25) we discovered our de- fence on the run game wasn’t strong. We tried to work a lot harder on it this week and it did pay out,” Said Bears wide receiver Josh Miller. “But obviously we still need some more work. We have to work on self discipline. It’s ourhomegamesowewanttoputona show. Unfortunately this year it didn’t turn out as well as we wanted.”
So far the Bears are winless after three games but they’ve still got lots of opportunity to turn it around with three more games on the regular sea- son schedule.
The Bears will be in Guelph on Thursday, October 8, to take on Our Lady of Lourdes.
They will return to their home field at ODSS on Thursday, October 15, to host St. James.
Game time is 3:00 p.m.
