The Orangeville District Secondary School Bears hockey team started the 2015 season with two games on the plus side during the opening week of Division 4 / 10 high school hockey.

The Bears are the defending Division champions after finishing last season with an 11-1 regular season record and storming through the playoffs scoring 16 goals in the final three games.

The Bears season got underway on Tuesday, November 4, with a home game at Tony Rose arena, against cross town rivals Westside Secondary School Thunder.

The Bears wasted little time in setting the tone for the game and left with an 8-0 shut-out for their first outing of the year.

Returning to Tony Rose two days later, the Bears hosted Guelph’s Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute with a 2:00 p.m. game.

ODSS took an early lead, then continued to apply pressure for the full three periods.

Centennial tried to take advantage of a late game powerplay in the third period and peppered ODSS goalie Simon Bowyer with shots but Bowyer managed to take care of business and kept the puck out of the net.

The Bears left the ice with a 6-2 win and took over first place in the standings in the early going of the season.

“We’ve got the same team back that we had last year,” Said coach Justin Davis. “That’s a lot of grade 12s. We’re expecting to be one of the top teams in the league. We have high expectations this year.”

The team has several younger players suiting up as well with a roster of 22 players on the squad.

“The kids buy into the program really well,” Davis said. “One thing we have going here as opposed to some other schools is that the kids buy into the program. They come in grade nine and take their four years and go through. We’ve got a good mix of grade 12s and grade nines that come and practice and work hard, then in three years they cycle through. That’s been our strength in our program.”

The squad has two grade ten goalies – Bowyer, who played Tuesday’s game and starter Deacon Lawr.

The Bears have the advantage of having several players with AAA experience.

Returning to home ice, the Bears will host John F. Ross  on Tuesday, November 18.

Game time is 2:00 p.m.
