Anniversary of Montreal massacre marked by FTP

December 3, 2014   ·   0 Comments

The 25th Anniversary of what has become known as the Montreal massacre, in which gunman Marc Lépine took the lives of 14 students at L’École Polytechnique because they were women will be marked by Family Transition Place (FTP) today in Caledon and tomorrow in Orangeville.

In partnership with the Caledon Public Library, FTP will be hosting an evening vigil at the Bolton-Albion branch on tonight (Thursday) from 6 to 7 p.m. Tomorrow, the  Orangeville community is invited to attend a vigil at FTP Orangeville between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

This annual National Day of Remembrance is in memory of the tragic day 25 years ago when 14 women lost their lives to male violence. It is also an opportunity to consider ways we can individually take action to end women abuse. The Orangeville ceremony will include 14 community leaders pledging their commitments of change within their sphere of influence in honour of the 14 women killed 25 years ago.

Members of both the MENtors and Headwaters White Ribbon Campaign have been working hard to get more men from the Dufferin and Caledon communities involved with these ceremonies, and to ask them pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. Their commitment to eliminating violence against women has shown a steady increase in male presence at these vigils over the last few years.

Family Transition Place has over 25 years of history and commitment to working towards ending violence and supporting those who have experienced violence, by providing safe shelter and counselling to those women and children who need it the most. Last year, 162 women and 103 children from our community found refuge in our shelter. 1,023 men, women and children received support through our counselling and outreach programs. Over 6,000 youth received their Youth Education training, learning new skills and developing attitudes that will allow them to build healthy respectful relationships. Family Transition Place relies on community support through donations and sponsorships to ensure its programs maintain their high standard of excellence and that our Youth Education programs continue to be available to the youth and communities of Caledon and Dufferin.
