Once the responsibility of the Ministry of Transportation, the job is now being farmed out to construction companies whose trucks aren’t needed much in the winter months. Today, we suspect that the MTO has little, if any, such equipment itself.
The problem seems to be that some of the companies aren’t doing the job as well or as quickly as once was the case, to the point where one of them, Carillion Canada, has been fined $900,000 for failing to keep the Queen Elizabeth Way safe during storms.
In the circumstances, we think the Province should consider farming out the work to counties and regions that already do it on former highways, but this time compensating them fully for the cost.
