Small town junior hockey in Ontario is seeing some new front runners this year as the season has progressed to the ten-game mark in the schedule.

The Carruthers Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League has already seen a change in the top spot as the Orillia Terriers emerged in first place after last weekend’s games.

The Terriers won over the Schomberg Cougars on October 28, then followed up with a win over Midland two days later to move into first.

They displaced the Cougars who were in first place going into the weekend.

The Orillia team has a 9-1 record for the season so far.

The loss dropped the Schomberg team down to third place in the standings with a 7-2 record.

The Stayner Siskins moved up a notch to take over second place in the division with an 8-1 record.

Stayner has been a solid front runner in the division over the past few years and are again looking strong this season. Their only loss this season was to Orillia back on October 2.

The Penetang Kings and Alliston Hornets both have nine points for the season and are in fourth and fifth spot in the standings.

Penetang has won four of their nine games and took one overtime loss.

The Hornets have a 4-4-1 record and have been struggling at the start. The Hornets are the defending Carutthers Division champions and have either won the division or went to the final every year for over ten years.

The bottom three teams in the division are struggling.

In sixth place, the Midland Flyers have a 2-8 record.

The Caledon Golden Hawks are in seventh place winning only one game out of eight played so far.

In the basement, the Huntsville Otters have won one game out of nine played and have one overtime loss.

It’s still early in the season so a lot can happen as the year progresses.

The league’s fan base is still strong and games are getting good attendance now that junior hockey is again being played in the province.
