Outlaws flag football season ready to start playoffs

Junior and senior divisions battle it out

The Orangeville Outlaws flag football program has turned out to be a real success with more players than ever signing up for the season this year.

Due to the pandemic, this is the second season in a row the Outlaws have had to suspend their regular summer league football program.

The flag program started last year when there was a demand from players who wanted to still be active and participate in a competitive sport.

Teams were divided between junior players and senior players with games happening every Sunday on the field at Orangeville Christian School.

They are now getting ready to move into playoff mode. The playoffs will be held with a round-robin style tournament to determine the division champions.

“In the junior division we have five teams and the senior division has four teams,” explained coach Brian Ainsco. “We had more but some of the senior kids decided to go to Guelph to play tackle football.”

Some centres have resumed full tackle football this season and moved from their regular summer schedule to a fall season for this year.

“Once Ontario Football gave us the okay to go and do stuff, we were good to go,” Brian said of the flag program. “Compared to last year we had a lot more kids out, and we had a successful season. We have a lot of returning players and some kids from other areas. They flocked to it and they love it – they’re having a lot fun. It’s been a competitive season. There hasn’t been a team that has really dominated. All the teams have been very well put together and even all the scores have been very close. Now we’re in the playoffs – it’s a round robin tournament. Two Sunday’s from now, on the 17th we’ll have the final five-team bracket playoff.”

With more and more sports starting to resume activities, it is anticipated the Outlaws will be getting back to the regular tackle football season when the summer season resumes next spring.

That will have to wait for the okay from Ontario Football who will be following provincial and health district guidelines when it comes to contact sports.

The Ontario Provincial Football League has already resumed some activities in the province but many centres opted out of competition.
