With one year under its belt, Hogey’s Social Club has worked hard to help local organizations through a number of fundraisers within the community. From Ping Pong tournaments, to Chili Cook-Offs, the club’s members have helped create events to help members of the community.
This fall, Hogey’s Social Club will be hosting a second annual golf tournament, which will benefit Spenser’s Kids, a charity set up after the loss of a local child, to help kids who can’t afford to play hockey to participate in the sport.
“The past year we’ve done a number of fundraising initiatives,” said Gerry Hogenhout, owner of Hogeys Sports Bar and co-founder of the Social Club.
“The mandate of our club is to organize fundraising events and give all profits back to the community.”
Last year, the golf tournament was a huge success, and a sold-out event. The first tournament was held as a fundraiser for Bravery Park, to help with some of the costs of the project, which would act as both a memorial and educational park in memory of those who have lost their lives in battle.
“Other than the hail, it was a tremendous success,” said Mr. Hogenhout. “We had a great response, it was a fantastic event, and we were able to raise $1000 for Bravery Park.”
The event consisted of a tournament, dinner, and concert, the latter two which were held at Hogeys Sports Bar for participants in the tournament.
“The intent of our annual tournament is to provide fundraising opportunities for different local charities each year,” said Mr. Hogenhout. “We really try to focus on recipients on a needs basis. Hogey’s aims to support local people who may have experienced misfortune or a disruption to their lives.”
Proceeds from the golf tournament are divided 50/50; half the funds raised go towards the selected recipient, and the other half remains within in the club to help others who may encounter issues throughout the year. This way, funds are always available to help when a need arises, instead of the club having to wait until an event is held to be able to provide any assistance.
“Our club is a little bit different than most,” explained Richard Menard, the other co-founder of the Social Club. “We don’t collect member fees from those interested in joining; all we ask is that they participate in our fundraisers and help us spread the word.”
That means that all funds for them to help local groups come from their different fundraisers and events.
This year, the golf tournament has space for 72 golfers, will include a buffet dinner once again at Hogey’s, and will include an entertainment package. Unlike last year, however, there will be an option for those who aren’t participating in the golf tournament to attend the dinner and entertainment, or just come out for the entertainment.
For the whole package, the cost is $60, just dinner and entertainment is $30, and just entertainment is a $10 cover charge.
“It’s really exciting, because Scotiabank has come on board this year as our main sponsor,” said Mr. Menard. “They will be collecting the registration fees, handing out raffle tickets and manning the door, as well as the tournament will be part of their matching program.”
Currently, they are still looking for prize donations from local businesses and members of the community. All donors will get a blurb and mention during the event, as well as have the opportunity to provide business cards with their prizes.
“It’s really important to us to promote local businesses,” added Mr. Hogenhout. “They help make this possible, and they’re what help make our community thrive.”
The second annual Hogey’s Golf Tournament will be held on September 12 at Lynnbrook Family Golf Centre. The registration deadline is August 21, and participants can register as either an individual, or as a team of up to four players.
