2015 was a great year for Friends of Island Lake (FOIL), a group of approximately 40 volunteers who have worked tirelessly and have now successfully completed the Vicki Barron Lakeside Trail at Island Lake Conservation Area.
The past year has been highly rewarding and successful in terms of funds collected and the completion of the West Link.
Throughout the year FOIL hosted three very successful events. The year began with a well-attended Family Day which included many new and exciting winter activities. In July, FOIL hosted the seventh annual Bass Derby and Family Camping Weekend. In September many people enjoyed the second annual Seniors’ Day.
FOIL members also participated in a spring trail donation day, CVC Foundation Gala, Dinner-of-the-Month draw, two displays at the Orangeville Farmers’ Market, selling OFAH raffle tickets, scrap metal collection, participation in the annual 10k/5k Classic Race, Orangeville Rotary Club’s Help Make Orangeville Shine and tree planting and the Grand Opening Celebration.
A group of FOIL members and friends, which have been given the name Trail Blazers, worked tirelessly throughout the cold winter months and up until early July cutting and screwing in deck boards and railings. It is through their generosity and determination that helped complete the construction of the West Link.
The West Link was opened by CVC on July 18th with an official grand opening celebration held on August 28. Since the opening of the West Link, the trail has become an increasingly popular destination for walkers, cyclists, parents with strollers, runners and our four-legged friends.
At this time I would like to thank all of our donors and supporters who have assisted FOIL since 2005. Thanks to all of you our vision was realized and the steady flow of visitors is a true indication of how much people enjoy the trail and Island Lake Conservation Area.
FOIL continues to be an active group who will continue to raise funds for future amenities to the Island Lake Conservation Area. The Credit Valley Conservation has invited a large contingent of stakeholders to participate in a series of meetings throughout 2016 with the purpose of developing a new five-year strategic plan for Island Lake. Once the plan has been finalized and presented to the community, FOIL looks forward to assisting with fundraising and promoting any new and exciting additions to Island Lake Conservation Area.
FOIL is looking forward to continued success in 2016. We are always looking to attract new members. If you are interested please contact Sandy Camplin at scamplin@creditvalleyca.ca
