Monday Night at the Movies accepting food bank donations

By Jasen Obermeyer

Monday Night at the Movies is screening the movie I, Daniel Blake next Monday, February 27, in support of Orangeville's Food Bank and Shelburne's Shepherd's Cupboard.

The organization's website, Monday Night at the Movies (MNM) was launched in 1997, and is a “non-profit organization running in partnership with the Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival Group.” Founded in 1989, “Film Circuit is TIFF's successful film outreach programme, bringing the best of Canadian and international films and artists to communities across the country,” which now has 180 groups in 160 communities across Canada. MNM has screened over 200 films at Orangeville Galaxy Cinema.

Tickets for the movie are $9 for the 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. screenings, while the 10 p.m. screening is $7. Tickets are on sale in advance at BookLore, or on the night of the screening, cash only.

MNM will be accepting non-perishable food donations and financial donations. Heather Hayes, Orangeville Food Bank's executive director, said the food bank's volunteers are very excited about the movie, as MNM is very supportive of the food bank and the organization values them as a community partner.

“The movie they have chosen is very relevant in how it relates to who we see coming through our doors,” said Ms. Hayes.

Andrea Stewart, a committee member at MNM, said in an email to the Citizen that the film portrays the challenges and tribulations individuals face in everyday life and that Monday Night at the Movies felt it could use this opportunity to support its own community members.
