For all book lovers in Dufferin County, the wait is over, as the One Book One County book selection announced is Canoe Country: The Making of Canada, by Roy MacGregor.
The One Book One County program, now in its ninth year, allows all residents of Dufferin County to read together in a gigantic book club. The program promotes Canadian literature, reading and discussion by encouraging everyone to participate in book clubs, online chats, and activities related to the theme of the selected Canadian title.
The Chief Librarians of Grand Valley, Shelburne and Orangeville, along with the staff of BookLore, announced the title at last Thursday's Dufferin County Council meeting.
Nancy Frater, owner of BookLore, says books or genres are chosen that people don't usually read. “We wanted it to honour the 150th anniversary of Canada.” She says Canoe Country ties in with the history of Canada, the canoes importance to the country and the history behind it.
In a press release to the Citizen, Mr. MacGregor says, “If the canoe is not on the Canadian flag, it is most certainly to be found in the Canadian imagination.” He argues the canoe was instrumental in making Canada and is a vital icon. Mr. MacGregor is an acclaimed and best-selling author of both fiction and non-fiction books, winning several awards throughout his career.
The grand finale of the program will take place at Dufferin County Museum & Archives (DCMA) on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 and are available from BookLore, DCMA, and the Shelburne, Orangeville and Grand Valley Public Libraries. Mr. MacGregor will be there to talk about the book, give readers an opportunity to ask questions and possibly read a bit from it.
Ms. Frater says the program is very important, because it brings people together when at a time they are very busy. “It encourages others to be accepting of something they might not normally read.”
