Outlaws Bantams hammer Toronto in home opener

The Orangeville Outlaws Bantam team are now 2-0 for the season after delivering a strong performance against the Toronto Jets on Sunday, June 5, at Westside Secondary School.

The Orangeville team opened the season the prior weekend with a 65-18 win over the TNT Express in Beeton on Sunday, May 22.

Sunday’s game against Toronto turned out a 26-6 game at the end of the first quarter when Bradon Barrow scored two touchdowns.

From there the Outlaws kept up a strong offensive effort banking on the running play for most of the game.

On defence, the Orangeville team turned out a powerhouse display after shutting down Toronto again and again for the full four quarters.

“I thought we played well and so did Toronto but I think we were the better team and we executed better,” said Orangeville defensive back Brayden Sandler. “On offence we blocked better and we played as a unit. Our defence was playing great today. Our quarterbacks were great, our defensive line was playing good and our linebackers were great.”

The Toronto team had a good start going into the quarter with a long pass that brought them to the O-ville15 yard line but they couldn’t break through the Outlaws defence.

On the turnover, Barrow ran for 60 yards to score and Nathan Falconi ran in the two point convert for the extra points.

On defence, Tyler Mihkelson, Brayden Sandler, Lucas Horvath, and Roy VanDerVeen provided some solid stops.

The Jets score midway in the quarter to bring their total to 13.

Two more TDs from Barrow in the quarter and successful converts from Falconi and Aiden Murray gave the Outlaws a 27 point lead.

Murray followed up when he stripped the ball from an opponent then ran for a touchdown.

Barrow got another touchdown early in the second half in what was becoming a run-away game.

Midway in the quarter, Tyler Simpson recovered a fumble to put the Outlaws at the ten yard line.

Roy VanDerVeen crossed the goal on the next play.

Three more touchdowns, two from Falconi and another from Barrow, ended the game at 81-13.

Post game, head coach Jim Walsh told the team that although the victory was well earned, the Toronto team lacked experience and the squad will have to prepare for their next outing when they take on the North Bay Bulldogs.

“We’ve got to prepare our offence to be ready for their offence. Then our defence, we’ve got to be ready because they’ll be coming at us,” Brayden Sandler said of what the team will have to do to be ready for the next game.

They’ll have two practices before their next game.

The Bantams will host North Bay on Sunday, June 12, at Westside Secondary School.

The kick off for that game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
