Ping-pong tourney this weekend will be fundraiser for FTP

This weekend, Hogey’s Social Club in the Alder Street Recreation Centre will be hosting their first annual ping-pong tournament, in support of Family Transition Place (FTP).

The event, which will see a full day of qualifying rounds on Saturday, followed by the semi-finals and finals on Sunday, will include individual play in a round-robin event, as well as a concert later Saturday evening.

“Hosting a ping-pong tournament was just one of the things we really wanted to put on when we started this social club,” explained Richard Menard, tournament chairman. “We picked February because it tends to be a very blah month. Everyone is usually stuck indoors, so we picked it to get people out of the house.”

Although the club asks that potential participants register before this weekend, Mr. Menard added that there will definitely be spots available day of play for those who did not have a chance to register, or had not been aware of the event beforehand.

“If we have a lot of people who show up on Saturday, we’ll be able to have about six hours of playing, and then we’ll have to determine who moves on to the semi-finals and the finals on Sunday,” he said.

“There is also going to be a trophy for the winner.”

The cost of the event is $20 per person, plus the donation of a non-perishable food item for Family Transition Place. There is also a buffet-dinner available at an additional cost.

“We saw that there were a couple of write-ups around Christmas-time that FTP was low on food, we decided we wanted to do something to help them,” said Mr. Menard. “That’s a part of our mandate – we fundraise in Orangeville to help organizations and people in Orangeville.”

The local band Dufferin County Line will be performing at Hogey’s at 8:30 p.m., with partial proceeds from their portion of the evening also going to FTP. The cost is included for tournament participants, however the concert will be open to anyone. Entrance will be $10 per person, or $15 per couple plus the donation of a non-perishable food item.

Hogey’s Social Club will also have a membership sign-up sheet out for anyone interested in joining the club. The club meets once every two months and plans on continuing to host events to benefit the community.

“We want people to know that we don’t have a membership fee for being a part of this,” explained Mr. Menard.

“All we ask is that you have an email address to join with, because that is how we keep in touch with our members and send out updates.”
