Former Shelburne mayor to challenge for D-C Liberal candidacy

Next Saturday, former Shelburne Mayor Ed Crewson will officially launch a campaign to become Liberal party candidate in Dufferin-Caledon at the next federal election.

His closely kept secret became public knowledge Friday, the night after a gala event honouring his long service for Shelburne and Dufferin County.

One of the speakers at the gala was incumbent MP David Tilson, who had high praise for Mr. Crewson’s work at the municipal level.

The campaign launch will be at 3 p.m. next Saturday at 595 Riddell Road, Orangeville.

In an email to local media, George denHam, communications director for “Ed Crewson for Dufferin-Caledon,” said Mr. Crewson “has been Greenlit by the Liberal Party of Canada as an official nominee to challenge for the Liberal candidacy in Dufferin-Caledon. We are confident Ed will not only win the contested contest to become the Liberal Candidate, but go on to be elected the next Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon.”

An insurance broker, Mr. Crewson was the longest serving member of Dufferin County Council, having served for 26 years, including a term as county warden, and was the highly popular and successful mayor of Shelburne for the past 17 years.

Mr. denHam said that on “going out on top” completing his last four-year term as mayor, “Ed realized he had accomplished all he had set out to do at the municipal level and was ready for the next challenge.”
