It started out as a way for new moms to stay connected and keep their business enterprises viable.

However, the Mom Market has grown to include a wide variety of business owners who come together at various places and offer their products and services to the public.

The Mom Market started in a neighborhood in Hamilton and has grown to include chapters around the province and around the country.

“We are a monthly market run out of local venues,” explained The Mom Market Orangeville market director, Melissa Shea. “We have our first market planned for next month on the patio at the Hockley Valley resort. We’re showcasing ten vendors which are all in the Orangeville area. It could be a service or a something they produce. The idea and the goal of The Mom Market is to be able to provide a platform for local businesses to come together under one roof for a family event where they can showcase and sell their products and services. Especially now with COVID-19 our economy has really been hit. Now more than ever our local businesses need our support.”

The Mom Market started as a one-off event in Waterdown last year. It proved to be so popular organizers decided to turn it into a monthly thing.

Originally the market was created to help new moms who were looking for an avenue to stay busy and connected with other people.

“A lot of moms can feel isolated when they go on maternity leave,” Ms Shea explained. “It can feel very isolating for many of us moms when we’re at home with the baby and not working any more. A lot of moms have been inspired by their own children to make a product and start a business.  In 12 months we’ve branched out to 12 different divisions. We are not just a mom market any more. We have men, we have women, we have parents and non-parents, that all come together at an awesome venue and awesome monthly market. We’ll be at different venues each time.”

While many of the vendors only sell their products at the pop-up type event, others who have brick and mortar businesses around town like to come out and be a part of it as well.

The group tries to host the event with a festive atmosphere to make fun for everyone.

“All of our events have free admission. We provide swag bags for the first 25 customers through the door. They are filled with local goodies. We have a grand prize draws as well, and that is filled with local products. You can have a chance to win if you make three purchases at the event. You have a ballot card and get it stamped and you can enter the grand prize draw.”

Vendors at the inaugural market include, Fragrance & Friends, Wild Knots Macrame, Mellie’s Creations, The Sophiesticated Baby,

Made by Sasha Jade Art, Sweetlegs Shelburne with Isabel, Grassroots Eco Refills, Shop Little JJ, Lanel Parties, and Boss Made.

The Mom Market will hold its first Orangeville Event at the Hockley Valley resort on Saturday, August 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
