Town to celebrate Canada Day virtually

Orangeville will be celebrating Canada Day a little differently this year, with local officials imploring area residents to help “paint the town red” in honour of the big day. 

With the COVID-19 pandemic still impacting people’s ability to gather in public, the Town has come up with a number of ways for residents to celebrate the country’s 153rd birthday. Locals are being encouraged to join in the festivities by hanging Canadian flags, and decorating their homes in red and white to demonstrate their Canadian pride. A special ‘paint the town red’ poster is included in this week’s Citizen, which locals can decorate and display in the window at their home. 

“Gather the family for a porch party, and get ready to celebrate while maintaining a two metre distance from your neighbours,” a Town press release reads. 

In addition, Town Hall, the Orangeville Public Library, and the Broadway medians will be illuminated with red flood lights to mark the occasion. Canadian flags will be hung along the downtown core, with local stores distributing around 4,000 mini-flags to their customers. 

Canadian Heritage will be hosting two nationwide televised shows on CBC, with various artistic and musical performances planned throughout the day. A specially-developed app will allow Canadians to view a virtual fireworks show in the evening on July 1. 

Canada Day greetings from Dufferin-Caledon MP Kyle Seeback, Dufferin-Caledon MPP Sylvia Jones and Orangeville Mayor Sandy Brown will be streamed through the Town’s social media channels. 

“Wherever you are, connect with your family and friends and start planning your virtual Canada Day. Help us to paint Orangeville red,” the Town release concludes.
